What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient technology for health and wellness. Yoga means union, yoking of the mind, body and spirit. With this union of the mind, body and spirit, comes self awakening and transformation. Many people think of yoga as just a set of exercises or a routine for physical fitness. The asanas (postures) are just one of the eight limbs of yoga. A full Yoga practice incorporates not only asanas, but mindful living practices, breathing regulation (pranyama), awareness activities, one pointed focus, and meditation.

What makes a yoga therapy session different than a regular yoga class?

In a group yoga class, individual needs are difficult to fully meet. Every client has different needs and abilities, so even though a group setting is an excellent way to practice yoga, individual health and wellness needs are not fully met. Private yoga therapy with Lori is grounded in the ancient traditions of yoga. Lori embraces and teaches an 8 limbed yoga practice. Your individualized program will utilize yoga tools that are appropriate and selected especially for you and your needs. These may include breath work and asanas (yoga postures) specifically chosen for their effects and your needs. Other yoga tools that may be used, if determined appropriate, are pranayama and mudras for the energy body, chakra and prana vayu work, visualization, relaxation, yoga nidra, lifestyle recommendations, and the inclusion of ayurveda, the sister science to yoga. As necessary, Lori will also include traditional education on posture and movement, and specific exercises that may be necessary for your recovery/health.

I have never done yoga. Would this be a safe way to start?

Private yoga therapy is a perfect way to begin a yoga practice. Not only is Lori a professional yoga therapist who can safely guide you in all yogic practices, but she has expertise in anatomy and movement, and can adapt all yoga practices to support you in a safe environment. This would be a perfect way to transition to a group yoga class at The Folded Leaf.

I have an injury. Can I still do yoga and yoga therapy?

A person should be able to practice yoga during the later recovery phases of an illness or injury. However, it is best to work with someone who can provide a safe space for healing to occur. Yoga therapy would be an excellent way to support your recovery. Remember, yoga is not just about moving into a backbend or handstand. There are many tools in a full yoga practice. Just learning to breath and relax can go a long way to aid your recovery. If you are under a doctors direct care, it may be best to clear any new activities with your physician. You can feel safe in the knowledge that your health and wellness will be supported in your yoga therapy session.

How long does a session last and how many sessions will I need?

Your session will last between 60-90 minutes. It is recommended that for yoga therapy you commit to 3-5 sessions. After 3-5 sessions, you may be ready to discontinue private yoga therapy. Frequency will vary depending on your needs, and may occur once a week (or more) to once a month.
